Like Chicago’s 2.8 million residents, you’ll discover city living at its best with distinct food, culture and architecture. From the Merchandise Mart to the Second City, Chicago has everything a multicultural urban center can offer!

In addition to its vibrant future, Chicago shares a rich and unique history, dating back to the 1830s when it was the Midwest’s major transportation hub. With railroads and ships, mercantilism and trade were as key to the city’s growth as farming was in the outskirts of town.

In 1871, the Great Fire changed the face of Chicago—literally! But because residents had to rebuild the city, it allowed for a new grid layout as well as strict building codes and revolutionary architecture. Most significant are the contributions by architectural icons and structural engineers Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Daniel Burnham, William Holabird and Martin Roche who collectively rebuilt Chicago's downtown—with the world’s first skyscraper!

Today, high-rise condominiums span the length of the 22-mile shoreline both to the north and south of downtown, while the rest of the city is mainly occupied by brick mid- and low-rise complexes and one- and two-story brownstones.

North of the Loop, you'll see rows of townhouses on tree-shaded streets. Although some are maintained as single-family residences, many are divided into separate condominiums. In addition, new construction and rehab projects offer homebuyers contemporary quarters close to downtown.
Situated along the water, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Uptown, Edgewater, and East Rogers Park are among the Northern Chicago neighborhoods which offer beaches, marinas, lakefront parks and golf courses to lucky locals.

New residential condominiums and converted luxury lofts can be found on Chicago's south side. This industrial district has been transformed into a thriving community by real estate developers and city visionaries. In addition to retaining its rich cultural history and landmark sites, the area encourages green living with a public parkland that runs along the shoreline connecting the South Loop, Douglas, Oakland, Kenwood and Hyde Park neighborhoods to the Loop and beyond via a pedestrian trail and bike path.
Chicago's widespread scope features detached single-family homes (with front and back yards and private garages) for those seeking some space further out from the Loop and the lake. Originally established by European immigrants and pioneers, these small communities have retained their traditional cultural values and signature style charm, from large Victorian homes to classic Chicago bungalows.
As you can see, Chicago has something for everyone! Sophisticated skyscrapers, contemporary condos and vintage abodes—in unique neighborhoods that boast a natural landscape of trees and water amid all the amenities afforded to big city living. Few places in the world can offer as much desirable diversity. Welcome home!
